All three carry the same traffic. They cost very different amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is how to choose, without the jargon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"h-the-short-answer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The short answer<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>Distance<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What to use<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Under 3 metres, same rack<\/td><td><strong>Passive DAC<\/strong> \u2014 cheapest, lowest power<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3\u201315 metres, next rack along<\/td><td><strong>Active DAC or AOC<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>15\u2013100 metres, same row or hall<\/td><td><strong>AOC<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Over 100 metres<\/td><td><strong>Transceivers and fibre<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Any link through a patch panel<\/td><td><strong>Transceivers and fibre<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last row catches people out, so it is worth saying plainly: <strong>a DAC and an AOC are single, fixed cables.<\/strong> They plug straight from one switch port into another. If your link runs into a patch panel, you cannot use either one, no matter how short the run is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"h-dac-the-cheapest-link-you-can-build\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">DAC: the cheapest link you can build<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Direct Attach Cable is copper with transceiver-shaped ends moulded on. There is no laser and no optics inside \u2014 just wire. That makes it the cheapest option by a wide margin, and it draws almost no power, around a tenth of a watt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> server to top-of-rack switch, and switch to switch inside the same cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to watch: DAC reach shrinks as speed goes up. At 10G and 25G you can expect around 5 metres. At 400G and 800G, expect 2 to 3 metres. Always check the length against the speed you are buying, not against a general figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trade-off is bulk. A 400G DAC is thick and stiff. Your switch still sees a simple cable, but the signal travels as light instead of electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gets you three things a DAC cannot offer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reach to 100 metres<\/strong>, instead of a handful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No interference.<\/strong> Fibre ignores the electrical noise that copper picks up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A thin, light, flexible cable<\/strong> that routes neatly and does not choke airflow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best for:<\/strong> rack-to-rack and row-to-row links, and anywhere a DAC is too short or too bulky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trade-off is that an AOC is sealed. You cannot clean or replace the ends. A <a href=\"https:\/\/optics.carritech.com\/pt\/optical-transceivers\/optical-transceivers\/qsfp-dd\/400g-qsfp-dd\/400g-qsfp-dd-dr4\/\">400G QSFP-DD DR4<\/a> draws up to 12 W and reaches 500 metres over single-mode fibre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You pay that for four things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. <strong>Distance.<\/strong> From 100 metres up to 10 km and beyond, depending on the module. 2. <strong>Repairs are cheap.<\/strong> A failed link means swapping a module, not re-pulling a cable. 3. <strong>Your cabling lasts.<\/strong> Fibre installed for 100G will still carry 400G and 800G later. Only the modules change. 4. <strong>You can monitor it.<\/strong> Transceivers report their own temperature and light levels, so you can spot a link going bad before it fails. DACs and AOCs are fixed lengths, so a 3-metre spare will not cover a 5-metre run.
